What’s in your beauty products?

Toxins

Skin may seem like a waterproof membrane, but that doesn’t mean it is impermeable. Just because you are not ingesting or inhaling something doesn’t mean it is not finding a way into your bloodstream, your fat stores, and your organ tissue.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it needs to breathe, sweat and release its natural oils to be healthy and protect your body from the outside world.

The chemicals in make-up, soap, lotions, powders and sunblocks can block these functions and also be absorbed through the pores and minuscule spaces between skin cells. Once these chemicals enter the body they can cause
• toxic buildup
• hormone disruptions
• carcinogens and free-radicals
• DNA mutations
• allergic and immune reactions
• environmental damage

Just take a look at the ingredients listed on your shampoo, body lotion, facial moisturizer, or sunblock. Unless you are a chemist, chances are you will not be able to decipher what it is that you’re putting on your body. With regular use over long periods of time, some of these cosmetic ingredients can do more harm than good.

3 Signs of Gout and How to Treat It

gout and alkaline water
How do you tell if your pain is from arthritis or gout.

Gout is a relatively common hereditary metabolic disorder when a person’s body cannot break down or eliminate uric acid. The uric acid crystallizes in the joints and provokes the body’s immune system to go into attack mode. This causes the area to become red, inflamed, painful and extremely sensitive to the touch, where even the weight of a bedsheet may be too much to bear.

What is the difference between gout and arthritis?

Arthritis covers a broad scope of problems that all have to do with the inflammation of the joints. Gout is actually considered a form of arthritis, but differs from osteoarthritis (caused by excessive joint wear) and rheumatoid arthritis (an auto-immune disease) because it is caused by these deposits of uric acid crystals.

Gout or arthritis? How to tell.

Why drink alkaline water?

Some acids are essential to your body. Ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C, helps your immune system fight invading germs. Hydrochloric acid is produced by your stomach to digest your food so that the nutrition can be absorbed. Amino acids are crucial to perform functions in the brain and body. But all acid is not the same and too much of anything is never good. Acidic waste builds up in the body due to poor diet and unhealthy lifestyles. Alkaline water can bring you back into balance.

Here are a few ways to start alkalizing your water and your body right now at home!

A quick Q & A from Dr. Simone Laubscher: what is your philosophy to eating?

“My philosophy is all about balance and the 80:20 rule so you keep weekdays clean and more alkaline and have a little fun on the weekends. I’m not a big fan of dairy or gluten for my patients and I usually suggest no carbs after 5pm so that patients wake up feeling more energised. Pescatarian is the way live but I rotate in 31 other organic proteins for other patients depending on their digestive systems.” – Dr. Simone Laubscher, PhD, WelleCo Nutritional Expert

This morning I came across an interesting article titled “Why you Should Drink Warm Water and Lemon.”  Well when I wake up in the morning I go straight for 32 ounces of cold water, so I was curious to learn why warm lemon water was a good thing.  According to the article, it boosts your immune system, aids in digestion, clears skin, helps with weight loss, and balances pH.  Balances pH? Am I back in chemistry class? Apparently lemons are an incredibly alkaline food, and now I know you are wondering why that even matters.  (I was too!)  Then I remembered last year reading The Paleo Diet for Athletes, which also discusses alkaline and acidic foods.  Today, I decided to refresh my knowledge on alkaline foods…

What is the idea behind eating alkaline foods and why is this particularly important for athletes?

The Real Verdict on Cauliflower Rice

I’ve been seeing recipes for cauliflower rice, but never tried them because I never thought cauliflower could replace regular rice. My family are big rice eaters and I assumed they wouldn’t be excited about making a switch, but one night I thought it wouldn’t hurt to try it as a low-carb, alkaline alternative to rice.
